What we do to help...

Saint Josephs Trust works to provide as much as we can for the communities in need. In the past we have sent books, paper and pencils for use in the classrooms of the Dalit, as well as purchasing benches and desks to supply students and schools in need. We have even afforded the purchase of materials and manpower necessary for the construction of a small house. With your contributions of school supplies and money, we are able to make a huge difference in the lives of the Dalit living in India.

The Struggle

The Dalit community in India has been repressed for thousands of years by those within the caste system. They were previously known as Untouchables, a name which is derived from the fact that it was considered dirty to touch one of them. For the Dalits, opportunities for employment and education are few and far between. They are forced to exist in squalor and poor living conditions simply because of the family that they are born into.

What Can You Do to Help?

There are many things you can do to help. Even the simplest things and donations make a huge difference in the lives of the Dalit community. The best place to start for contributions is the most basic of necessities. Things like pencils and paper are the most requested. Any medium for learning English is also highly valued there, flash cards and grammar books in particular.
